The most important piece of your motorcycle outfit is of course your helmet. It has to look cool, match your bike and needs to be safe. There are lots of types of helmets to choose from. One of them is the modular helmet. You’ll often see modular helmets with touring riders. Mainly because of the fact that these helmets are be equipped with lots of accessories like an internal sun visor or are prepared to easily install a Bluetooth communication system. At first sight a modular helmet doesn’t look so different from a full face helmet. But when you take a closer look, you’ll often see a button on the chin bar that reveals that it’s a modular helmet.
Characteristics of the modular helmets
The button on the chin bar is there to flip up the piece that provides your face with protection in case of an accident. Of course if you flip up the chin piece, will compromise a bit of safety for comfort and functionality. Jet helmets do also sometimes have a chin bar, but it’s mostly for cosmetic reasons. These helmets are ECE22.05 certified as jet helmets, something to keep an eye on! You can find all the info on the product page or give us a call when you need more information!
A modular helmet itself is not any different from a full face helmet except for the flip up chin bar, as told earlier. So no compromises were made in terms of comfort or designs. And comfort is what you’ll get! It’s not for nothing that touring riders use these kind of helmets on their long journeys. And all major manufacturers like Schuberth, Shoei, Shark, Nolan, Scorpion and AGV have modular helmets, so there are lots of brands to choose from. Every brand has their own unique features or design. A modular helmet from Schuberth will be more quiet and if you like bright colorful designs Shark can provide you that.
The benefits of a modular helmet
But why should you buy a modular helmet? Well, take European Police officers for example, they use this kind of helmet for easy communication. So they don’t have to take off their helmet when they talk to you if you were speeding (again). It’s also nice to open your helmet on a warm day when you are riding through towns or have to stop for a red light. Further, we all know how annoying it is to have to take your helmet off to pay for gasoline at the gas station, at least in Europe, but when you have a modular helmet you don’t have to. Same if you are wearing glasses, a modular helmet makes your life easier by not having to take of and put on your glasses every time you put your helmet on or off. So a modular helmet is there to make things easy for you!
Also the system that gives you the ability to flip up the chin bar adds a little bit of weight to the helmet. So if you’re searching for a super lightweight helmet you are better off with a full face helmet or focus on carbon fiber modular helmets. Because of the flip-up mechanism these helmets may suffer more from wind noise so keep that in mind! Although the addition of weight and noise, most of the modular helmets are designed to be aerodynamic and if you have the right size you barely notice the weight difference. Something to keep in mind as well: Most buyers of modular helmets ride motorcycles with an upright position. The vents on the helmet are designed to catch air in this upright position. Modular helmets have great ventilation, if used in the correct way!
